My Research
My research interests are currently focused on developing strategies for the prevention of musicians' focal dystonia. This is a novel area for research and has until now, been restricted to recommendations for avoiding bad practice habits including excessive repetition, improving biomechanical issues, revising lifestyle choices, and managing stress and other psychological problems. My research aims to further develop this field by understanding exactly what non-dystonic musicians currently know and understand about the condition, and how dystonic musicians navigate their rehabilitation. What they have learned retrospectively from their rehabilitation experiences? Can certain retraining protocols used in the rehabilitation process be adapted and utilized by non-dystonic musicians? Can we objectively measure improvements in muscle co-activation? To what extent can we lower risk factors and change attitudes towards the condition?
